The Goldilocks Project

Shareen and the Three Sisters

By Karen A. Kimball

Once upon a time deep in the heart of the big city lived a little girl named Shareen and her three sisters, Andrea, Yolanda and Natasha. Shareen's sisters were so much older, wiser and mature that they were always telling Shareen what to do. “Don't play with those.” “Don't touch that.” “You're too little” Shareen wished she was big.

One day after Andrea, Yolanda and Natasha combed, crimped, primed, tucked and trimmed; they left for a party. Shareen went wandering. She wandered up the stairs, through an open door and right into her sisters' bedroom. The silver glitter of an evening gown caught her eye. So she tried on the dress. Too big. So Shareen tried on a velvet dress, too stuffy. Next she tried on a frilly dress with rows of ruffles. Perfect, Shareen thought as she twirled around the room.

She twirled her way to the rows, racks and stacks of shoes. Shareen picked a pair of pink platforms and tried them on. But she fell off and snapped the strap. Too dangerous. So she tried a pair of sturdy boots. She slipped her foot into the boots and began to lace them, back and forth back and forth. Too confusing. Then Shareen found the perfect petite pumps. They fit like Cinderella's glass slipper.

Shareen clop clop clopped down the hall to the bathroom to admire herself in the mirror. There on the counter was a bottle of nail polish. Shareen painted a few finger nails. She held out her hand to admire the color. Doesn't match. So Shareen opened a lip stick. She twisted it up and down, up and down. Then she smeared some all the way around her lips twice and kissed the mirror. Too glossy. When Shareen saw hair clips, she clipped, twisted, tied every hair clip she could find into her short hair. Beautiful, she thought.

Feeling quite big, Shareen decided to have her own party in her own room. She invited all her favorite guests. Shareen was too busy to hear the front door open.

When Andrea, Yolanda and Natasha came home from their party they went straight to their bedroom.

“Hey somebody's been wearing my dress,” Andrea said.

“Somebody's been wearing my dress,” Yolanda said.

“Well, somebody's still wearing my dress,” Natasha said holding up an empty hanger. Andrea started to stomp out of the room but she tripped over a shoe.

“Hey somebody's been wearing my platforms and busted the strap,” she said. “Somebody's been wearing my boots and tangled the laces,” Yolanda said.

“My pumps are totally missing,” Natahsa said.

“If I catch that somebody I'm gonna….. “ Yolanda stammered as she headed down the hall with Andrea and Natasha flurrying behind. As they passed the bathroom Andrea screeched.

“Somebody's been using my nail polish and spilled it,” she said.

“Somebody's been messing with my lipstick,” Yolanda said.

“Somebody's been using my hair pins and they're all gone,” Natasha said holding up the empty box. The girls all growled at the mirror.

Then they heard a soft whisper down the hall. They crept down the hall to catch somebody. When they came to the door way they stopped. There was Shareen looking very guilty. Chatting with her party guests.

“Am I as beautiful as Andrea, Yolanda and Natasha?….When I grow up I want to be just like them,” Shareen said.

When Shareen heard a bump she turned around. She jumped up and started to run. The three sisters caught her by the arm. They dragged her down the hall. And sat her squarely in a chair right in front of the mirror. Andrea fixed Shareen's dress and fastened her shoes. Natasha painted the rest of Shareen's nails and realigned her lip stick. Yolanda combed and clipped Shareen's hair with matching ribbons.

“Looking good honey,” Andrea said.

"What a big girl,” Yolanda said.

“You're one of us now sister,” Natasha said, trying to ignore the lipstick smear on her party dress.
