Build Your Own Compound Words
Activity One
1. Choose two short words.
- Example: shoe, dog
2. Put them together to make one word.
- Example: shoedog
3. Draw a picture illustrating your new compound word.
- Example: a picture of a dog small enough to fit inside your shoe, or a dog wearing shoes, or a very small dog
that likes to ride on your shoes while you walk
Activity Two
1. Choose a compound word.
- Example: goldfish
2. Divide the compound word into its two little words.
- Example: gold fish
3. Switch the order of the two little words.
- Example: fish gold
4. Put the two words back together into a compound word.
- Example: fishgold
5. Draw a picture illustrating your new compound word.
- Example: a sunken treasure guarded by a school of fish
Activity Three
1. Choose two compound words.
- Example: bulldog, hedgehog
2. Switch the first halves of the two words.
- Example: hedgedog, bullhog
3. Draw pictures illustrating your new compound words.
- Example: hedgedog--a dog who likes to live inside hedges, bullhog--a pig with horns
