Everyone knows you don't always get what you hope for.
But what do you get instead? What if you get tidal waves, banana splits, tornadoes, castles and kings, pirates, flying appliances, and even space aliens? What if your school disappeared--but the space alien didn't? For one young boy, at least it takes only a few simple hopes to turn his normal day inside out, upside down, and beyond his wildest imagination. It is enough to make you think twice about what you hope for... Rick Walton, author of the hoppingly successful Once There Was a Bull...frog (Gibbs Smith, 1995), has created a surprising story that will appeal to the hopes of every child (and maybe every adult). |

Reviews:

"Sooner or later, everyone learns that you don't always get what you hope for, but even children slow to
that realization will get a healthy dose of humor with Walton's new book." --Nancy Hobbs in
The Salt Lake Tribune
, August, 1996.
"Sparks with fun, imagination, adventure...a lively tale that will no doubt entertain children who want to see what happens next. Walton...shows he's adept at sparking the imagination with this fanciful tale....a great ending liking the parent and child." --Ann B. Niendorf in The Daily Herald , September 2, 1996. "The pictures have many absurd details that extend the humor in the narrative. Most children will appreciate this funny fantasy." --Anne Parker, in School Library Journal , Nov. 1996. "A winning, high-spirited romp." -- The Kids' Inkslinger . "Rick Walton makes it appear effortless in this whimsical book for everyone....Walton has written a splendid antidote for anyone who thinks all experiences in life can be controlled. His plot development is as unexpected as the events he tells of. Your only valid expectation of this book is that you will experience laughter and loss of anxiety if you read it." -- The Association for Mormon Letters . "A delightfully silly book about a boy to whom anything can happen and it all does. Great illustrations." -- Childsplay , May/June 1997. "This is a fun book and stirs the imagination of every kid who likes surprises." -- UBS for Kids Online , June 1996. |

To Matt, Mette, and Sage Harrison, and, of course, to Hope. May they always get what they hope for, and more.

Author Bio:
|
Rick Walton is the author of thirty joke, activity, picture, poetry, and board books for children. He hopes to author many, many more. He and his wife, Ann, are the authors of four children. They hope to author a few more. They all live in Provo, Utah, on Walton's Mountain, and hope to live there for another ninety years or so, except for the occasional trip around the world. If Rick got everything he hoped for, he'd probably be in big trouble. |

Rick's Notes:
|
Notice the menu board at Burgers R Us. It's one of my favorite things in the book. It was all the illustrator's
idea.
One message of this book is that sometimes when you don't get what you hope for it's because something better has come along and you need to be flexible enough to go with surprising new opportunities. I like banana splits. Pirates of the Caribbean is my favorite Disneyland ride. Few kids are upset when they have to miss school. What kid wouldn't want to see an alien? The kid in this book doesn't get what he hopes for, all in all he gets something better! I never made hamburgers for twelve days, but I did cook in a Mexican restaurant for one year. |
