Rick's Notes on The Bear Came Over to My House

Tapping the Cultural Tree

Several of my books have started by my playing around with nursery rhymes and popular kids songs. How Many How Many How Many began with me playing around with the nursery rhyme "Jack Be Nimble". So Many Bunnies began with my playing around with "There Was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe." I have several unpublished manuscripts that Mother Goose also had a hand in.

The Bear Came Over to My House began, of course, by my playing around with the song "The Bear Went Over the Mountain". I wrote the manuscript in early 1999 on our trip to San Diego. When I do lots of driving, I do lots of singing. Even when I'm not singing out loud, songs run through my mind, and I can't help playing with them and twisting them. The idea for this book came while I was driving and playing with the song.
